Beauty queen of only eighteen
She had some trouble with herself
He was always there to help her
She always belonged to someone else
I drove for miles and miles
And wound up at your door
I've had you so many times
But somehow, I want more
She had some trouble with herself
He was always there to help her
She always belonged to someone else
I drove for miles and miles
And wound up at your door
I've had you so many times
But somehow, I want more
The opening line of the song summarizes the story of “She Will Be Loved.” The girl in this song is young and beautiful, but she has allowed her beauty to cause her trouble. At such a young age, she has allowed men to take advantage of her and instead of evaluating her romantic choices, she believes that her problems stem from her own flaws.
Some people suggest that this song is about a prostitute, which would fit with the meaning of these lyrics. The girl is young and beautiful, but because of her troubles, she’s had to face adult realities that make her feel worthless and insecure.
The girl and Adam have had a rocky relationship, constantly breaking up a getting back together. Even though they’ve tried to make it work multiple times, Adam wants to try yet again because he truly cares about her.
If the girl is indeed a prostitute, then many men have ‘had’ her. Adam sets himself apart from these men because though he’s ‘had’ her before, he truly wants to be with her outside of a sexual context.
Every time Adam tries to leave the girl, he always ends up back at her door, hoping she’ll open to up to him, by either literally opening her door or letting him into her heart.
It also illustrates his dedication. Adam is willing to drive for miles to end up with this girl, and he wishes she would appreciate his effort.
Adam Levine is in the friend zone. He loves the troubled girl and is constantly there for support, but she never returns his affections.
Returning to the themes of prostitution, this line suggests that though Adam and the girl are in love, they can’t be together because she ‘always belongs to someone else,’ aka the man who is paying for her company.
I don't mind spending every day
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay a while
And she will be loved
She will be loved
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay a while
And she will be loved
She will be loved
In an interview discussing the process behind the album Songs About Jane, drummer Ryan Dusick said “She Will Be Loved” was born one night when he began playing a bossa nova beat on the drums. Bossa nova is one of Dusick’s favorite styles of music, and bossa nova fits with the tones of the song. Bossa nova typically has themes of romantic longing and women, which “She Will Be Loved” appropriately addresses.
Adam again highlights his dedication to this girl in the first line of the hook. The reference to the pouring rain means that even when life is less than beautiful, he’ll still be there waiting for her if she needs him. He will keep his distance if that’s what she wants, but he’s always just around the corner if she changes her mind.
“Broken smile” shows that while the girl puts on the facade of happiness, she’s really broken and dying inside. Because Adam is a true friend and lover, he recognizes her pain and knows that all she needs is someone to spend time with her. If she lets him ‘stay awhile,’ she’ll feel loved and more confident.
I know I tend to get so insecure
It doesn't matter anymore
It's not always rainbows and butterflies
It's compromise that moves us along
My heart is full and my door's always open
You come any time you want
[Coda]
I know where you hide
Alone in your car
Know all of the things that make you who you are
I know that goodbye means nothing at all
Comes back and begs me to catch her every time she falls
Tap on my window, knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful
[Hook]
[Outro]
Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
Yeah
I don't mind spending every day
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Try so hard to say goodbye
